Sherlock Holmes (2009) Movie Review

Director: Guy Ritchie

Writer(s): Michael Robert Johnson & Anthony Peckham

Starring: Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams

The start of a brand new year brings a fresh start to the movies I get to watch, review, and if so intended watch again. Although Sherlock Holes (2009) came out to theaters on Christmas Day I only managed to get to see it as of the first day of the new year. I had long been anticipating this movie having been a big fan of the work that director Guy Ritchie (RocknRolla, Snatch, & Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels) had done prior to making this movie. The end result is a movie that makes for a fantastic viewing experience.

When watching Sherlock Holmes one must remember that this is not your Grandfathers classic detective movie at all. This version of Holmes has a new edge to the classic storyline. The movie itself blends the classic ideas with a perfect touch of the brilliance that Guy Ritchie provides in his movie.

The movie which stars Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, & The Soloist), Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, & Enemy at the Gates), & Rachel McAdams (State of Play, The Notebook, & Wedding Crashers) is brilliantly cast and always leaves you in a state of pure enjoyment. The movie is well acted, exciting, funny, and original. Sherlock Holmes (2009) deserves the credit of being what one would want out of a movie that you pay money to go and see. This is not just a movie designed for quick money making, it was made by people who posses the same heart as the movie going public that keep them in the business.

One of the greatest parts of Sherlock Holmes (2009) is that it has a hidden messages placed in it that people may or may not come to realize. The plot of the movie revolves itself around a higher level secret society that are doing what they can to keep the people of England under control. The best way they can think of in order to produce this order is to create a system of fear in which would cause the people to believe in their Government or their higher powers so to speak. This is very similar to the situation going on in our world right now. There is even a disease/flu that is being created by the higher powers in this movie that they produce in the belly's of pigs...*cough* SWINE FLU? If you are not quite familiar with these Government references you can read more about it at sites like A Brave News World

I found myself enjoying every minute of this movie and often wondered why it did not go after a summer release date as it seems to be the style of movie that would naturally come out during the summer movie season. However the more I watched it the more I realized that the brilliance behind Sherlock Holmes is what sets it apart from the Summer Blockbusters and which is why it belongs out during this time of year.

This movie is not going to turn any heads in the Academy I am sure as it comes to nomination time, but I do believe that anybody who enjoys a well scripted, well plotted, and well acted action packed ride will be in complete astonishment when it comes to viewing Sherlock Holmes (2009).

Do not hesitate to go out and watch this movie as I am sure that you will not be disappointed with what you get from it. The first major recommendation I am giving for 2010 is to see Sherlock Holmes (2009)

My Rating:90%
